47 Good & Bad Types of Guys in the Dating World and Secrets to Read Them
There are many types of guys out there, but how many different types have you met? Learn the different types of guys and understand them much better!
When you’ve been in the dating world for quite some time, you may notice that some guys can fit into certain categories. And we’re not just talking about whether they’re good guys or bad guys. We’re talking about some of the usual types of guys that women may find themselves dating.
With each type of guy in the categories below, you’ll see their defining features and what it is about them that might allure you. In some cases, you may find that you’ve dated a guy who embodies two or three of these archetypes; that’s quite common.
Of course, knowing the types of guys out there can also help you to side-step potential heartache. [Read: Good vs. bad – What kind of guy do girls like?]
The types of guys you’ll bump into in the dating world
Now, we shouldn’t generalize, but overall, the types of guys you’ll learn about below are very common in the world of dating. Can a guy embody more than one type? For sure, and that’s what makes dating so interesting!
Understand the different types and know your perfect fit.
1. Mr. Gazillionaire
This is the guy who seems to have it all. Vintage cars? Check. A Rolex watch? Check. Great taste in dining? Check. This guy is the epitome of class, style, and of course, riches.
He’ll take you on a spontaneous cruise on his yacht. He’ll sweep you off to an exotic vacation spot. He may even shower you with jewels, designer clothes, and everything money can buy. [Read: The honest truth – can money buy happiness in love?]
But alas, not everything can be bought with money. The rich guy commonly fits into one of two categories. He may either be a guy who’s spending his inheritance and has no concept of earning his own money.
If that’s not the case, then he may be working so hard to make all this money that he may not have as much time for you.
2. Mr. Comedian
Everyone loves a funny guy, especially one who can turn a somber party around. The funny guy always has a witty quip to whip out whenever things are getting dull. He’ll always have something amusing to say to keep your spirits up when you’re down.
Funny guys are a winner, but there can also be a downside to them. He may use his jokes as a defense mechanism whenever you want to talk about something serious. That’s quite frustrating, considering that you may not be able to keep yourself from laughing.
3. Mr. Romantic
He brings you flowers, writes you songs and poems, and makes you feel like his muse, his star, his one true love. Being swept off your feet by a romantic guy is something that our teenage young-adult, novel-reading selves have always dreamt of. [Read: How to be more romantic]
Yes, he may well be the man of your dreams, but what happens when the romance wears off? The romantic may be enamored with the idea of being in love. However, he may not be too excited about the standard relationship stuff, like arguing and losing time for romantic dates.
4. Mr. Teacher
Think of a guy who’s old enough to be your teacher but still hot enough for you to sleep with. This is the older man who teaches you all sorts of things about life, love, and romance.
He’s from a different generation, so his ideas, his thoughts, the way he talks, and the way he moves are all new and exciting for you.
Love shouldn’t be confined to a certain age bracket. But having a huge gap between you can spell trouble in the long run. You may have been raised very differently, and you may not always be able to meet eye to eye.
Also, some people can be so judgmental as to assume that you’re just dating an old guy for his money. Unsurprisingly, a lot of women may be bothered by this. [Read: Dating an older man – 9 reasons to do it at least once]
5. Mr. Hot, Young Stud
The exact opposite of Mr. Teacher, this young one can bring you back to the carefree days of your youth. He’s got the boyish charms and the energy of a man whose hopes and dreams have not been crushed by the weight of reality.
Alas, like with Mr. Teacher, the age gap can still rear its ugly head. Dating a younger guy can be exhausting, especially if you no longer have the stamina to keep up with him. But again, age ain’t nothing but a number. [Read: The good and the bad of dating a younger man]
6. Mr. Nerd
Nerds used to be the “losers” back in the day. But today, being called a nerd is a compliment. They know all sorts of things, from advanced programming languages to fantasy novels to every physics theory that’s been debunked.
You can learn a ton of new things from Mr. Nerd, and the best part is that he can often be pretty modest about all the cool stuff he’s got in his head!
The nerdy types are often the most interesting people. The only downside is the fact that their passion for their nerdy pursuits may make them neglect stuff like shopping for an updated wardrobe, eating healthy meals instead of instant noodles, and maybe even a date with you. [Read: The guys you should stop dating if you want real love]
7. Mr. Mama’s Boy
Boys who love their mothers can be some of the sweetest guys around. Their bond with their mother can be due to the fact that their moms loved them and taught them well. As such, you can be assured that they know how to treat a lady.
The only issue with Mr. Mama’s Boy is that you may feel like you’re constantly competing with his mother.
This can be made worse if the mom thinks that you’re a threat to her hold over her son. Tread lightly because she can be a force to be reckoned with! [Read: How to get his mom to like you]
8. Mr. Rebel
He’s the anti-hero of the story, whose dark view of the world makes him wax poetic monologues about you being the only light in his life.
He doesn’t trust the government, and he doesn’t like anything too mainstream. Usually, he goes his own way, and you’re thrilled that he wants to take you on the ride.
Mr. Rebel’s “my way or the high way” attitude can be a problem during times when he needs to conform to the norms of society. He may insist that a leather jacket and studded boots are fitting for a wedding ceremony. He may constantly be vehemently at odds with people who don’t agree with him.
Eventually, Mr. Rebel may make the highway seem a little more desirable. [Read: 5 giveaways of an emotionally unavailable man]
9. Mr. “Perfect” Guy
Let’s face it, this guy doesn’t exist. Not to sound cynical, but if you think you’re with Mr. Perfect, then you probably haven’t known him for long enough, or he’s just creepily talented at hiding his flaws. There is no perfect guy, the same way there’s no perfect relationship.
Every relationship has its ups and downs. Every guy you’ll fall for will have a unique flaw. He may not be the sweetest, richest, the most intellectual guy you’ll be with. But he just might be…
10. Mr. Party Guy
You’ll quickly realize that this guy’s main interest is alcohol, and he’ll be constantly surrounded by a group of dudes who love booze as much as he does. Pub crawls, dorm parties, off-campus keggers—you name it, he’ll be there.
Mr. Party Guy is usually fairly attractive and loves having a good time with girls as well as with the boys. But, with all his social activities, this guy barely has time to study, let alone find the time for a serious relationship. [Read: Life of the party – How to be noticed and loved by everyone]
11. Mr. Womanizer
Mr. Womanizer will be found at all the parties too, but instead of trying to get as drunk as humanly possible, he’ll be trying to get into every woman’s pants. He’ll either be alone, since friends just get in the way of his slick routine, or with one wingman.
This man may be more attractive than Mr. Party Guy and will have a great deal of practice using smooth lines. So, be careful that you don’t fall for his charm unless you’re fine with no-strings-attached fun.
The big issue is that if he thinks you’re hot, he may pretend that he’s committed to you while wooing other women behind your back. Proceed at your own risk! [Read: Subtle signs he’s being too flirty with other women]
12. Mr. Athlete
Mr. Athlete will be a member of one of your school’s competitive sports teams and may even be on an athletic scholarship. Regardless of the fact that he sometimes smells as if he just came from a workout, you’ll likely find his fit, muscular body drool-worthy, especially if you’re athletic too.
Although some male athletes are great students, others may fall behind and need to borrow a cute girl’s notes once in a while. But, like Mr. Party Guy, he may be too busy with his own activities to seriously date a woman.
13. Mr. Political
Mr. Political is the one who runs for student body president in his first year, attends every protest, and loves to give impromptu speeches on the quad. If you don’t know him, you soon will, as his campaign posters will be everywhere.
He likely hails from a political family and dreams of being a high-salaried, world-changing politician someday. If you date him, you may end up feeling more like a campaign manager, secretary, or publicist instead of a girlfriend. [Read: The best deep conversation starters to impress anyone, anytime]
14. Mr. Artist
This man will have artistic talent beyond the norm, whether he enjoys visual arts, music, drama, or the art of literature. You may see his paintings displayed in the student center, hear him playing at a coffeehouse, or watch him starring in the theater department’s latest dramatic production.
However, the biggest problem with this type of guy is that he may require a great deal of time away from his partner in order to work on his projects. [Read: Obvious hints guys give when they want more space]
15. Mr. Wise Guy
Regardless of his major or grades, this guy knows everything—or at least he believes that he does! He’s the type that will say anything in class, even if it’s something the professor or another student has already said, just to hear himself talk.
From telling you where you should eat on campus to giving you a list of courses you should take to maximize your GPA, he’ll constantly be reminding you that he knows best.
This smart-aleck may seem helpful at first, but if he notices that you’re getting tired of being told what to do, he might just disappear. [Read: How to express your opinions without seeming cocky]
16. Mr. Philosopher
Mr. Philosopher is likely studying philosophy itself, or he’s being forced to study business by his parents while he digests Plato’s texts on the side.
This deep-thinking guy will normally be found at fair trade coffee shops or outdoors, pondering the meaning of life.
He’ll have a stack of books with him, and if you two have a conversation, he’ll quote passages from intellectuals whom you may have never heard of.
But, sometimes, Mr. Philosopher can get so lost in his head that he forgets he’s in a physical body and thus ignores his physical needs. If you need a touchy-feely or highly sexual relationship, you probably won’t find it here. [Read: 5 giveaways of an emotionally unavailable man]
17. Mr. Professional
Mr. Professional seems to think he’s already on Wall Street! He’s the type who will wear business suits and carry a briefcase to class, turning up his nose at his peers who are wearing sweatpants and carrying backpacks.
He’ll also shun standard social gatherings, only hanging out on campus for career fairs and networking events.
When you do run into him, he’ll frequently mention the high-paying job and big house he’s going to have in just a few years’ time. While he may make a practical, responsible partner after college, if you want to enjoy the college experience, he’s not the best person to have by your side. [Read: How to be more interesting – 21 tricks to o from boring to lovable]
18. Mr. Metrosexual
While this guy may enjoy activities that are often considered feminines, such as shopping for clothes and bedroom accessories, he’s still into dating women—he’s just what they call a metrosexual.
He’ll usually look as if he’s stepped out of a high fashion ad, and due to an extensive knowledge of the best colognes, he’ll often smell devastatingly sexy, too. Women will generally enjoy his company, as they’ll find they have a lot in common with him.
Though his stylish, sophisticated appearance may be initially alluring, you may tire of hanging out with a guy who cares more about hair products than you do! [Read: What makes a man metrosexual?]
19. Mr. Hardcore
Mr. Hardcore listens to punk, rock, or heavy metal music and spends the majority of his free time at shows that, for most people, would necessitate the use of earplugs. He may have several tattoos and at least a couple of piercings.
This man likes to appear super-tough, so he might use language that isn’t exactly polite. However, especially if your interests fall in line with his, you may be able to see right through his tough exterior in order to appreciate the sweetheart underneath.
To the hardcore guy, rock-and-roll is a lifestyle that needs to be lived consistently. If you want your guy to accompany you to country concerts and appreciate your pink tees, you should probably pass on dating this one. [Read: Reasons why women date awful men]
20. Mr. Tortured Soul
The reclusive, tortured soul will seem like either a diamond in the rough or someone that you need to avoid. This guy was probably a bit of an emo kid in high school and doesn’t plan on changing his habits.
He’s pretty smart and will get good grades when he bothers to try. Outside of class, he can normally be found surfing the ‘net in his room while listening to somber melodies of some sort. He may have artistic talent, although, unlike Mr. Artist, he probably won’t go public with these skills.
If you’re a social butterfly and you date this guy, you may end up attending many events on your own, as he generally doesn’t enjoy being part of large groups. [Read: Unpopular opinion – 10 reasons to date the bad boy]
21. Mr. Sloppy
This guy just doesn’t know when to stop drinking, and he has no care for manners. In fact, this guy might even spill his drink on you while he’s trying to introduce himself to you and probably won’t even think to get you a napkin when he does.
He’s so sloppy and drunk that if you tell him your name is Sara, by the end of the night, it’s safe to say every time you see him again, he will have called you Sally, Samantha, and anything other than Sara, because that’s what these sloppy guys do.
Of course, we’ve all had our weaker, less attractive moments when it comes to a night out involving drinking, but if you meet Mr. Sloppy out at the bar more often than you would like, it’s safe to say he’ll be a consistent mess. If he’s sloppy when he drinks, imagine what he’s like when he eats! [Read: Importance of first impressions – Secrets to help you make a good one]
22. Mr. Usual
Mr. Usual is a rare breed. This guy acts as if he’s living his life on the set of a TV show where everybody knows his name and what his usual order is.
This guy comes into the bar acting as if he’s best friends with all the bartenders, and when he does get his chance to order a drink, he can be heard saying something like, “you know, the usual.”
This usually drives the bartender into a slight panic because the reality is that Mr. Usual isn’t as memorable as he thinks he is.
23. Mr. Cheapskate
Have you ever gone on a date with a guy who lets you know how much the bill was? If so, then you have already encountered Mr. Cheapskate.
This is the type of guy who will come up to you, flirt with you, talk to you, and actually come across as rather charming. Although, after a while, you’ll notice that he’s not once offered to buy you a drink.
Once you realize he’s not offering, you decide to order a drink for yourself, and only then, in classic cheapskate form, this guy will say something like, “oh, what’s that taste like?” which is him suggesting he wants to try yours. Or he will somehow convince you to buy him a drink.
It’s great to be on a budget, but talking about it too much is just tacky. [Read: Signs you’re being used for either sex or money]
24. Mr. Demanding
Mr. Demanding is an asshole, period. This guy is so arrogant and self-entitled, all for reasons unknown. If you’ve ever been out to eat and heard or seen someone clap or snap for a waiter, then you know the type of guy we’re talking about.
This is the guy that you will meet out at the bar who is yelling, literally, at the bartenders because, for some reason, he thinks being demanding, really loud, and arrogant will get their attention much sooner. Little does he know that being an asshole gets him nowhere. [Read: 15 types of toxic relationships]
25. Mr. Smooth Operator
When you’re at the bar, and a guy walks up to you, it feels good to know people find you attractive, and it doesn’t hurt to be told so by strangers.
But if you meet Mr. Smooth Operator out at the bar, it’s safe to say that not only will you meet him, but every other girl in the bar with you will meet him as well.
This guy uses sweet one-liners and pickup lines as often as he can. He asks for your phone number, and you then overhear from outside the restroom door of the bathroom, introducing himself to a girl in line the exact same way he introduced himself to you.
This guy might be a smooth operator, but he’s also somewhat of a player, and if you’re looking for love, he’s probably not your best bet. [Read: Surefire signs you’re dating a player]
26. Mr. Downer
Mr. Downer is the guy who has either been left unemployed, heartbroken, or maybe just happens to be an alcoholic who probably should stop drinking and seek help. This guy wants everyone to know that he’s been laid off or that his girlfriend just cheated on him. He’s really depressing to be around.
If he knew how to keep the conversation to a minimum or learned how to listen instead of doing all the talking, his company might be more enjoyable. But he doesn’t know how to do anything but complain about what he’s going through and talk about himself.
27. Mr. Creeper
Mr. Creeper likes to hang out in the dark corners or ends of the bar and peruse the ladies entering and leaving throughout the night. You might find this guy mysterious, but in reality, he’s just a creeper.
This is also the guy that might hit on you, and sometimes, he may even become your five o’clock shadow the entire night because he just won’t leave you alone.
This guy doesn’t make you feel relaxed by any means, and if you find yourself getting stuck with Mr. Creeper, just take two steps back and get out of the dark shadows! [Read: Pervy guys and how to spot them on a date]
28. Mr. Commitment-Phobe
He can be charming, brooding, mysterious, friendly, and the life of the party. He can be all that you’ve ever wanted in a guy. The only problem is that he’s afraid of commitment.
There’s a part of you that wants to change him. You want to be the one to be able to allay his reservations about it, but he says he’s just happy the way you both are. “Just enjoy the ride,” he says.
Well, if that’s not what you want, then it’s time to get off at the next stop. [Read: The best-kept secrets to making a man commit to you]
29. Mr. Control Freak
He buys you a fancy dress and tells you to wear it on your next date. You appreciate it as a grand, romantic gesture — that is, until he tells you what to order at the restaurant, what to talk about, what to say, and how to act.
Well, girl, you’ve got yourself a control freak. He’s the bossy guy who will order you around and throw a hissy fit if things don’t go his way. This type of guy can be abusive, so it’s best to steer clear. [Read: Ways guys manipulate and control their girlfriends]
30. Mr. Underachiever
Couch potato, lazy, basement-dweller, lives with his mom, doesn’t have a job, doesn’t have plans. You know this guy. He’s the type who will get out of bed just to pee and then go back to lying on the couch for the rest of the day.
He has no hobby *except for maybe video games*, skills, aspirations, or future. Believe us, stay away from this guy. [Read: Lazy people – 50 wily ways to manipulate others to work for them]
31. Mr. Jekyll-and-Hyde
He’ll catch your eye. Every girl’s eye, actually. He’s that dreamy, charming, interesting, witty, prince-charming kind of guy you would love to show off to your family and friends during holiday dinners.
However, once you get to know him, you’ll realize that he’s actually a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He swings from one personality to another and hides a million secrets. You never know what version you’re going to get on any given day. [Read: 21 big signs of emotional abuse you may be overlooking]
32. Mr. Alpha Jerk
You won’t miss him in a pack of other guys, as he is usually the leader. Whether in the club, in the office, or just about anywhere, he is the alpha male, and he won’t let anyone forget it.
He can be overbearing to the point that he’s annoying and disrespectful. He might even get into brawls or arguements with anyone who he thinks may steal the spotlight from him.
33. Mr. Cheater
This is definitely a guy to avoid at all costs. He’ll lie, deceive, and slither his way into your skirt, as well as the skirts of all the other women in town.
If you meet a guy who already has a girlfriend, but he cheats on her with you, get real. If he cheated with you, he’ll probably cheat on you, too. Do yourself a favor, and don’t even get involved. [Read: Sure ways to find out if you’re dating a cheater]
34. Mr. Rover
Though this guy may not actually act on it, the fact that his eyes are always roving around and visually ogling other women is enough to make you want to back off.
You don’t have to compete for his attention. And if he’s making inappropriate, pervy comments about other women, then what kinds of things is he saying about you behind your back?
Pick yourself up and move along. He’s not worth it. [Read: Emotional cheating and the bad things it can do to you]
35. Mr. Free-Loader
He may look the part: nice clothes, nice shoes, well-manicured nails, and all that. However, the free-loader is actually a kept man. He actively seeks out women to pay his way, much as a lazy, talentless guy would do.
He will charm you so that you’ll fall into his trap. After that, he’ll make demands while expecting you to unconditionally and unquestioningly provide for him.
36. Mr. Egomaniac
He’s a confident guy. In fact, he’s too confident. He cares way too much about how he looks, his reputation, and being the center of the universe.
He dislikes it if your opinion differs from his because his opinion is the truth. Honestly, he’s just exhausting to be around. [Read: 22 secret signs you’re dating an egomaniac]
37. Mr. Eternal Bachelor
He can be attractive, well-mannered, successful—an actual eligible bachelor. He’ll make you wonder why some woman hasn’t already snagged him down the aisle. Then you’ll start going out and will think that maybe, just maybe, you’re the Mrs. Right he’s been waiting for.
But you’re wrong—there’s no right woman for this guy, and there never will be. He’s fully committed, all right—committed to being eternally single. [Read: Casual relationship rules to keep it just casual]
38. Mr. Man-Child
He may be in his 30s or 40s, but he’s still acting like a frat boy. He’s into keggers, jerseys, beer pong, and video games. He might bring out the kid in you, too, because he’s a kid himself.
But if ever you get into serious trouble, you can’t expect him to be around. He’ll have hopped the fence with the underagers. [Read: Immature men – 27 man child signs and why you should stay away from him]
39. Mr. Needy
He shows up with flowers on every date, texts you morning through night, cooks for you from scratch and is just all-around perfect… until you realize that he’s actually clingy.
Deep down, he’s insecure, so he needs you to constantly assure him that he’s worth something. Sure, the gestures might be nice, but can you really imagine yourself having to coddle your man 24/7 for the rest of your life? We can’t, either. [Read: Easy ways to deal with needy people in your life]
40. Mr. Procrastinator
A guy that puts off everything until the last minute is not just doing so at work. He pays his bills at the last second or even late. He is generally irresponsible, not to mention incapable of making you a priority.
This is the type of guy that promises he will do something great for your anniversary but continues putting it off until you are too old to leave your front porch.
You do not want to end up with this guy. So, why date him now? You want a man that can keep his promises. [Read: Manchild alert! Don’t fall for the immature prick]
41. Mr. Love Bomber
A love bomber is dangerous. This is someone that rushes into things really quickly and probably says “I love you” early. They spoil you and treat you how you always wanted to be treated.
Sounds great, right?
No. A love bomber is on the hunt for someone looking for acceptance and validation. They love-bomb you and smother you with amazingness so that you crave that feeling. And they do it just long enough to trap you. [Read: What is love bombing and 5 ways to spot the signs early on]
Then another side of him comes out. The bomb goes off, so to speak, and this love bomber can become controlling, abusive, and even violent. This is a master manipulator.
42. Mr. Avoider
Much like Mr. Procrastinator, Mr. Avoider is emotionally juvenile. He may like you, and you may have a great time together, but anytime you want to take a step forward, he avoids it like the plague.
Then, he will make excuses not to meet your friends or family. He won’t make room for your toothbrush and an extra set of underwear at his place. Basically, he is doing all he can to avoid commitment. [Read: 20 downright strange but true phobias about love]
43. Mr. Pathological Liar
This isn’t someone who lies about cheating necessarily, but about everything.
If someone lies with no purpose, they have no problem lying to anyone. You’ll find that he lies about the smallest things to the biggest things, so how can you ever trust him?
You can’t. Time to move on. [Read: How to easily spot the pathological liar]
44. Mr. Misogynist
If he doesn’t treat other women equally, he won’t treat you equally. If he is only respectful to women he finds attractive and not anyone else, he is a misogynist.
No matter how much good you see in him and how successful or funny he is, a misogynist will never let you soar. He will never let you do better than him and will never consider your feelings or opinions.
The truth is, he may be damn good at pretending, but a misogynist is not a man; he is a coward. [Read: 18 ways to immediately identify a misogynist]
45. Mr. Green-Eyed Monster
Jealousy is ugly. We all get a taste of envy once in a while, and that is normal, but when it gets out of hand, you shut it down.
If they are jealous, you do not need that in your life. Jealousy doesn’t just drive them nuts, but it drives you nuts. You want to prove you are honest and loyal, but you shouldn’t have to all the time.
Jealousy means there is no trust, and you cannot date someone who doesn’t trust you. [Read: The full guide to turn a jealous boyfriend into a not-so-jealous one]
46. Mr. Ghost
Mr. Ghost is the man who disappears without a trace. Maybe you chatted for a week, maybe you went on a great date, maybe you have been dating for months, then he just dropped off the face of the earth.
No one is unreachable in this day and age. He is making the choice not to talk to you and not to answer you. Whether he haunts your Instagram or keeps up on your Snapchat, he is not interested in you at the level you deserve.
Even if he comes back to life and messages you, he does not deserve your attention. [Read: 15 reasons why guys ghost and turn into cowardly pricks]
47. Mr. Selfish
Relationships should be a two-way street. Hell, that’s true for even friendships and general encounters! If you meet Mr. Selfish, you’ll quickly come to realize that everything is about him.
If it’s a guy you’re dating, he’s selfish in bed and outside of it. He wants everything his own way, and he’s not pleasant when he doesn’t get it.
Don’t put your own needs aside for a guy like this; your wants and desires matter too. This is definitely one of the types of guys you should avoid dating. [Read: Selfishness in relationships – 15 tips to do the right thing]
